Where once news libraries were concerned primarily with filing press cuttings, GNM's Research and Information department now offers a pro-active research service to over 700 editorial staff.

Richard Nelsson will trace developments over the past 40 years including the arrival and impact of online information in the 1980's, the internet in the 1990's to the present situation of 'embedded'
researchers sitting in an integrated newsroom. He will also talk briefly about the current state of media librarianship in the UK.

Richard Nelsson is the Information Manager at Guardian News & Media (GNM), with responsibility for managing the company's Research & Information department. This provides a research service to all  Guardian and Observer editorial departments, as well as archiving the papers' text. He is the current Chair of the Association of UK Media Libraries (AUKML) and has contributed chapters on media libraries for the the two most recent editions of British Librarianship and Information Work. He is also the editor of The Guardian Book of Mountains and Double Measures, The Guardian Book of Drinking.
